Be Loving

"Let no corrupt communication proceed out of your mouth, but that which is good to the use of edifying, that it may minister grace unto the hearers." Ephesians 4:29

This is heavenly advice to Christian writers as to all Christians. Let us edify and not fall back on crass words in order to dismay, attack, and abuse our readers.

Many years ago I read a stand out article or essay from a writer that portrayed so well how there are so many ways to express ourselves in our language without falling back into the abyss of filthy words. I wish I knew how or where to find this article. It made, if I recall rightly, a great point of the use of swear words as laziness. I think it is even more than that. Profanity is unloving and therefore sin. As the writer conveyed, there are ways to convey anger to a reader that use the richness of the language available to us. We have no need to default to the lowest levels of expression.

There is much Biblical admonition on this topic. Our words reflect our witness to others about the character of God. Words can damage and wound or paint beauty and edification. Even when expressing emotions such as fear, dislike, anger, rage, and hatred -- which should be done in the right spirit and in order to resist evil as we are to do all things without complaining ( Philippians 2:14-16) -- there are words to use that can avoid the grimy, slimy pit of profanity.
